Staff - Linking Curriculum.

Staff responsibilities

We are using Compass+ as a tool to demonstrate that we are successfully meeting the Gatsby Benchmarks.

We are keen to develop meaningful relationships with education providers, employers and businesses to ensure our students gain the qualities, skills and qualifications required to fulfil their ambition and aspirations.

As staff, your role is to continue to provide dynamic and inspirational opportunities to bring careers learning both inside and outside of the classroom.  We are very lucky at DUTC to have a dedicated Careers Lead, Miss Agate (agate.m@doncasterutc.co.uk) who will answer any questions you may have, share opportunities and resources to help staff build careers into the curriculum. You will also get regular Careers updates in the weekly internal screens and the termly newsletter.

In addition to our specialist subject (Employer Projects) Here are more examples on how we meet Gatsby Benchmark 4:

In English

Our Year 9 students looked at living ethically in the modern word. Lessons focused on a variety of environmentalist campaigns, with students discussing and debating the merits of protests in society. This work was then used to inform students in their designing of ‘eco-homes’, with a number of students presenting their designs to St Leger Homes. This experience – from preparation, to design, to presenting – was invaluable for our students, giving them authentic feedback on their work from experts in the industry.
"Specific and detailed feedback from leaders in the industry was very useful for us. It’ll be feedback I can use in future presentations.” Hannah Rawson, Year 9.

IN SPORT

Our Y10 Sports Studies group have started to complete the Rugby League Tag Leadership Qualification. Martin Rowlands from Doncaster Rugby League Club has delivered theory sessions looking into the different qualities of effective leadership and also a practical session demonstrating the different ways a coaching session can be delivered. Students will go on planning, delivering, and evaluating a small session which they will deliver to their peers. The collaboration between the UTC and Doncaster Rugby League Club on this project has been positive, and we look forward to finding ways in which students can support the upcoming Rugby World Cup in Doncaster!

IN MATHS

Year 9 students took part in sessions delivered by our employer partner HSBC. The first session, "Banking 101," taught students the basics of banking, giving them the lowdown on what they needed to know, such as different types of bank cards, bank accounts, and how long it would take to repay loans. The second session, "Savvy Shopping", showed students how to be sensible shoppers, deciding whether something is good value, and how to save money and not waste it. A common complaint amongst students when leaving schools is that they don’t know enough about finance, and this is an excellent way to address this.

In Physics

Y12 and Y13 A level Physics students visited The University of Warwick

They attended some great talks from scientists working in the field and lecturers from Oxford on a variety of topics such as medical physics; treating babies in the ICU and using optical physics to scan the brain. A professor of astrophysics spoke about what we don’t know about the universe and they found out about a career as an astronaut from BBC TV show winner Suzie Imber.

In Citizenship

We had two very exciting visitors to the UTC for GCSE citizenship: Labour MP Rosie Winterton and Conservative MP Nick Fletcher. Both spoke to our Year 10 citizenship students about their roles as MPs, allowing students the chance for a Q&A session following their talks where students asked many questions about their roles within Parliament and other responsibilities. Students have been learning about the role of MPs within our local area as well as within government, meaning this talk gives them an invaluable look into their learning in the real world.
Nick Fletcher also spoke with our Year 10 student council candidates about their own upcoming election, giving them advice about being on a council and tips on being elected, discussing the manifestos that they had been writing as a part of their campaigns. This is what our students had to say about the experience:
“It was very informative and powerful.” - Toby C, 10.2: Creative Ambassador
“It was an amazing opportunity to talk to an MP of his status. I really enjoyed getting to know who he is.” - Ashton P, 10.2: Creative Ambassador VP.
